Rodolfo Torres to Give Presentation at AMS-MSRI congressional briefing
LAWRENCE — Rodolfo Torres, University Distinguished Professor of mathematics, will give a luncheon presentation Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the American Mathematical Society-Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (AMS-MSRI) congressional briefing on Capitol Hill.
These briefings link the mathematics community with congressional representatives and bring science directly to Capitol Hill decision-makers. Speakers offer stories of how federal investment in basic research in math and science pays off for American taxpayers and helps the nation remain a world leader in innovation. The AMS and MSRI host this biannual event.
Torres came to KU in 1999 and advanced to the rank of University Distinguished Professor in 2016. His research interests include Fourier analysis and applications in partial differential equations, signal analysis and biology. He specializes in the study of singular integrals, function spaces and decomposition techniques. Since 1993, his research has been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation. Through his research collaborations in mathematics, he has given numerous lectures around the world, and his interdisciplinary work in biology has received media attention from The New York Times and Science Magazine.
Torres regularly mentors graduate and undergraduate students and has received various teaching awards for his efforts with students, including a Teaching Excellence Award from the T. Kemper Foundation. He was elected to the inaugural class of fellows of the American Mathematical Society. He has also served the university as Faculty Senate president, associate vice chancellor for research, vice president of the University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. and interim vice chancellor for research.
