Co-founder of MathWorks Gives Bradt Undergraduate Colloquium


Cleve Moler the original author of MATLAB and one of the founders of MathWorks gave the 2018 Russell Bradt Undergraduate Colloquium on April 19, 2018.  He also took time to meet with math graduate students the following Portrait of Cleve Molerday.

The Evolution of Matlab and how it has evolved over more than thirty years was the focus of his undergraduate talk.  Doug Ward, associate professor of journalism and associate director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, attended the talk and provides in his blog an overview of Moler’s talk.

Moler is currently chairman and chief scientist of the company, as well a member of the National Academy of Engineering and past president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.  He received the 2017 Computer History Museum Fellow Award, 2014 IEEE John von Neumann Medal, and 2012 IEEE Computer Society Pioneer Award.

Moler was a professor of math and computer science for almost twenty years at the Universities of Michigan, Stanford, and New Mexico.  He spent five years with two computer hardware manufacturers, the Intel Hypercube organization and Ardent Computer, before joining MathWorks full-time in 1989.  

Russell Bradt came to the KU Mathematics Department in 1954 and also served a chair.
